Cheapskate: Free TV

File this under “super awesome but will probably be taken offline abruptly at some point because it totally can’t be legal to have this site”: SurfTheChannel.com.

Last summer I used a site called tvlinks.co.uk to watch the entire first season of Six Feet Under while on a cross-country road trip, and it was serviceable. It did have its share of issues, to include loooong load times (I would queue up an episode, go grab dinner, and then watch it) and pretty crappy quality.

SurfTheChannel.com is a site to behold (yeah, intended) by comparison, with hundreds of episodes of your favorite shows of the past and present. The other night my wife and I snuggled up to the pilot episode of Thundercats (well, I watched it and she dutifully ignored it). It loaded quickly, and the full-screen quality wasn’t half-bad. It has movies too, including those in the theater right now, which verges into totally-illegal-to-host territory, so I didn’t check those out.

So yeah, this is just about perfect for anyone with a laptop, or anything that gets the internet…PSP perhaps? Man, I’m just itching to get an iPhone now. Unlimited portable TV!

My Bags Are Packed, And I’m Ready To Go

I’m leaving for California tomorrow today, and I don’t think I’ll be short of any in-flight entertainment. I’m carrying on my PSP with three fully charged batteries of different capacities; the remains of past Sony handhelds that have since departed us. I’m also bringing my R4-ed out DS, you know, for all my homebrew games. I’ll of course have my iPod with me, in case I’m craving some hardcore Peggle action. If for some reason I feel like reading (not likely), I’ll have the book After Dachau by my second favorite author Daniel Quinn, or I can choose from one of three different magazines I’m bringing. Variety is the spice of life.

I plan on playing Daxter throughout most of the flight, or at least until I hit the inevitible moment where I have absolutley no clue what to do and I need to consult a walkthrough. I also never finished Hotel Dusk on the DS, which I was really into for awhile. Maybe I’ll give that another go. At least if we crash into the ocean, I’ll die doing what I love most: alienating myself from the rest of the world. Love ya!

P.S. This also means that I probably won’t be posting for about a week. Now I’ll know how Tyler feels. Try and carry on without me.

Portable Platforming in a Plane Over the Pacific (and some potential penguin penetration)

On Russ’ recommendation, I picked up Daxter on the PSP as the game that I’m going to try to play all the way through on my trip. I got it used at Gamestop for about 9 bucks, which seems like a pretty good deal. Even though I’ve never played a game in the Jak & Daxter series, I’m looking forward to this one; it got good reviews, and was made by Ready At Dawn studios, the geniuses that gave the world God of War: Chains of Olympus.

Between the six-plus hour flights both ways, and the hours that I am bound to spend driving up and down the California coast, I think I should definitely be able to finish the game. I’m not sure how long it is, but most PSP games are relatively short. It’s just too bad I won’t be back in time to do the ol’ Gamestop shuffle. The Sky’s The Limit

Let me show you them...at 30,000 feet

I’m going on a trip to the mainland (that’s what we here in Hawaii call the continental U.S.) next week, and one of the things I’m most looking forward to are the flights. Not because I enjoy making obligatory, meaningless conversation with strangers, but because it will be no less than 12 hours roundtrip solely dedicated to portable gaming.

When I travel, I travel prepared. I’ll be carrying on my DS and PSP, and even my iPod has games on it that I want to play, like Peggle and Phase. What I really want to do, though, is to buy and play all the way through an entirely new (preferably PSP) game in-flight. I went to Gamestop the other day to see what I could pick up, but I didn’t want to jump into something without being prepared.

So what are some games I should pick up and take with me? I’ll already be taking Patapon and Professor Layton, but other than that, I don’t know. I was really thinking about the Call of Duty PSP game, but the much less than stellar reviews are keeping me away. Thoughts? Suggestions? Donations?

Crap, Now I Kinda Want To Get This PSP

I couldn’t have cared two craps about a new PSP until I saw the picture above, and it’s not-too-shabby $200. And it comes with a free movie, Superbad, as well as a voucher to download a Syphon Filter game through the PSN channel for free.

It’s got me re-thinking the whole deal. I have until June before they start selling it anyway, so I’ve got some time to ruminate.

Lick it good
The most recent PSP firmware update, 3.93, is supposed to be out today. I tried to get it, but my PSP still only recognizes that 3.80 is the most recent one. Maybe I’ll be able to download it a little later.

I remember when I first had a PSP back in ‘05, and the updates were 1.50, 1.51, and so on. It sure has come a long way. The PSP is surprisingly getting more and more popular, and it’s nice to know that Sony still cares enough about it to release constant updates and high quality fresh titles.

just like old times

PSN Store screenshot
I’m slowly but surely getting to know my new PSP again. A lot has changed since last time I played one, and it’s weird to think that I first bought it three years ago, and only now is it truly coming of age.

Now there is the PSN store, were you can buy a bunch of stuff like old PSOne games and new downloadable games. You can also get some themes and demos and stuff. I tried to download the SOCOM 2 demo through the PSP itself, but for some reason, after it said it was done downloading, it would just freeze up the system and I would be looking at a blank screen until I removed the battery to shut it off. I’m going to try downloading some things via PC and transfer them to the PSP with a USB, maybe that will work out better.

So far, I’m really liking it again, and I think I’ll be much happier with it this time around. I’ve also decided that I’m going to do my best to keep all the random crap off of it that I had on my old one. It was full of picture packs, and random downloads and all this stuff that I didn’t want. Now, I just want to play the games, and enjoy the system in its purest form.

PSP-2000
I re-opened a whole new world of gaming for myself yesterday by impulse buying a PSP. I had a PSP a couple years ago, but with the lack of good games, I got rid of it. But now, with a new slimmer design and some great titles in its library, I felt it was the right time to pick one up.

The only game I got was God of War: Chains of Olympus. The GOW series is one of my faves, and is the biggest reason in got the system (what do you know, one game can sell a system!). I’ve only played the first few minutes of it, but it seems just as epic as the last two. I also plan on picking up Patapon (a steal at only $20), and maybe the new(er) Syphon Filter.

Before I bought it, I called Russ and asked what he thought about it. He brought up a good point that he pretty much has no need for any more portable platform. I agreed, but then I thought about it and realized that I really don’t use my DS as solely a portable system. When there is a game that I want to play on it, it can be my main platform, just like the Wii or 360. I know God of War is definitely next on the list after I finish No More Heroes (soon), whether I’m at home or on the go.

there’s only one thing I want to know: how many boobies will there be in this one?

Chains of Olympus
I just read the IGN review of God of War: Chains of Olympus, and I swear to Kratos that if Gamestop was open right now, I’d go and buy a PSP just to play this game. I loved the first two Gee-Oh-Dubs for the PS2, and I even downloaded the mobile game. I never got a chance to finish that one, though, due to unfortunate circumstances.

IGN’s Chris Roper basically said that the game is just as awesome as the first two, and in some ways a little more. The sound, the visuals, the combat are all spectacular, according to Chris.  One of the most surprising things I read was that the PSP’s limited control scheme actually worked a little better for the game than the PS2 controller, but I’ll be the judge of that. His major gripe was the lack or originality within the game. He said that the boss fights, although fun, are really nothing new compared to the first two games, and that the game as a whole sticks too closely to the GOW formula. I say, if it ain’t broke, don’t slap your wiener with it.

I will definitely play this game someday, but the PSP is going to need a few more triple A titles in its library ‘fore I buy it (again).

Only This PSP Design Would Win Me Back

Dude. I was all about the PSP, at first. In 2005 I was quite the casual gamer, only owning a Nintendo Gamecube and really only playing Tiger Woods golf games. When the PSP hit in March of 2005, I was ready for it, and to get back into games for realz.

I liked the fact that the games looked real nice, and played pretty well. Being a bit of a n00b I naively forgave its crappy control scheme and lack of non-ports. Oh, and I loved it even more once it was cracked and I could put a million NES games on it. Mark and I had a great time with SOCOM and Syphon Filter, and then my interest waned. That and I bricked it because I messed with it too much. So by summer of 2006 the PSP was a distant memory, and the DS Lite filled that void easily.

Now, mark my words, if the PSP looked like the picture above, I probably would buy it again and try out some of the newer games. I never beat Daxter, and the new God of War looks pretty awesome. But until then, I’m still happy with my DS Lite.

not a moment too soon.

Nearly three years after the Sony PSP’s release, you can now finally go online to a site and download trailers, demos and old PSOne games. It kinda sorta makes me wish I didn’t brick my PSP last year.
