Gots To Be Somebody Need Some Killin’

Last night after work drinking Red Stripes and eating delicious steaks at a friend’s house, all I wanted to do was come home and do some BF:BC killin’. Much to my chagrin, the game refused to connect to EA’s online servers, and couldn’t give me what I wanted needed.

Maybe this has something to do with the fact that the conquest mode is going to be available soon (thanks for the tip, blacktail), or maybe also has something to do with the fact that EA said they are going to be shutting down the majority of the demo servers soon. Whatever it is, it better be fixed soon…DAMN SOON!

Under Control

I work with a major Halo/COD4 fanboy who said he “very disappointed” in Battlefield: Bad Company. This is simply because it doesn’t have the Legacy control option where the left stick moves you back and forth and looks around, and the right one strafes. It seems like a really old school control, but he hates the default option so much, that he refuses to play the game after reserving and buying the gold edition. I feel somewhat responsible, because I was heavily talking the game up, and that’s mostly why he bought it.

I have issues with controls in games quite often, but I’m also able to adapt to new methods. I think it’s a little unfair to hate a game just because of the controls, unless it’s the controlling of vehicles that make a certain head-crab zombie game unplayable. Then it’s ok.

Disregard the highlighted parts of the picture above, it was the only one I could find.

Freedom Is In Fact Free

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! Except you, blacktail, I don’t think you’re from around these parts. I hope you are all enjoying your holiday. I’m spending mine killing some fake Russians in Battlefield, and then maybe some real life ones when I go into work later (Russians are really bad tippers).

Have a good long weekend everybody, and try not to burn your house down with a sparkler.

BF:BFF

It turns out that I was wrong about the Battlefield: Bad Company single player; it’s actually pretty good. I didn’t say it was going to be bad, but after choking down half the BF2MC campaign, I didn’t expect too much out of this one either. The demo did not do it justice, because I’m not finding my squadmates to be nearly as annoying as I did when I played abbreviated first level, and there are many more elements to the game that what is shown. The dialogue is pretty funny, and I like to hear what the peeps around me, especially Haggard, have to say.

I peeled myself off the multiplayer yesterday to give it a try, and I’m glad I did. I’ll definitely play through the rest of it at least once.

The New Gold Rush

I finally broke down this afternoon and picked up Battlefield: Bad Company. I was planning on waiting until I got the $200 Best Buy Gift Card that was promised to me when I bought my computer there and just playing the demo until it came. Lately, though, I’ve been having trouble finding demo matches online, and I’m sick of spending all this time on a game with no hope of any cheevers, so I decided to pick it up at Gamestop.

I just fired it up for the first time, and there’s a pretty interesting little intro that wasn’t on the demo. I’m going straight into the multiplayer, though, because I’ve been having withdrawals. This is shaping up to be a pretty good Saturday night. Who needs friends?

A Bit Misleading

I love Battlefield: Bad Company (well, the demo at least), but there is one thing that’s bugging me little.

In one of the load screens, it touts BFBC’s “100% destructible environments.” Now, saying that the environments are 100% destructible in this game is like saying Tyler is not 100% homosexual. Sure, you can blow out the walls, cut down trees, and destroy lots of stuff, but there are always some set pieces that can’t be damaged or destroyed, like con-X boxes, and building foundations. So, just as Tyler might get curious once in awhile and a visit a hetero-porn site, his homepage will always be wherethegirlsaren’t.com, and BFBC’s maps are not “100% destructible.”

I’d say it’s more like 85% destructible.

Demotopia!/Cheapskate/My Faves: Top Six Xbox 360 Demos

Listen. I know that Microsoft charges $50/year for their Xbox Live Gold membership, allowing you access to their robust online system. But did you know that every new Xbox 360 comes with a free Silver membership, which allows you to interact with friends (just not in games) and access to the Xbox Live Marketplace (XBLM), where you can download media for free?

What I’m getting at are the free demos you can download in XBLM. Currently, there are 158 to choose from. Here are my six favorite, in alphabetical order. Keep in mind that these are my favorite demos available, and are not reflections on the final games themselves:

Where the Hell Is Everybody?

All I want to do is play a little BF:BC right now. I just got home from work/playing darts at bar with a friend who kicked the crap out of me, the girl I really want to talk to lives three hours in the future and is sleeping, and my cat is licking herself caring nothing of me, so I don’t think it’s too much to ask to kill a few people before I go to sleep. The only problem is that I seem to be the only person in the world trying to play the Battlefield: Bad Company multiplayer demo right now. Every match I get in to just stops at the menu screen and tells me that it’s waiting for other players to join. That’s not fun. In fact, that’s the opposite of fun, that’s boring.

So, if you are reading this right now (1am Hawaii, 4am California, 11am Reykyavik) please send a game invite to TheJesusZombie on Xbox Live. I would greatly appreciate it.

Demotopia! Battlefield: Bad Company

EA’s Battlefield: Bad Company drops next week, but we tried our hands at the demo and this is what we think so far:

Mark:
This game is the reason I haven’t posted in the past 36+ hours, I can’t put it down. I came home after work last night looking forward to playing it, only to find out that they reset the servers every night, which puts the kaibosh on the multiplayer.

Speaking of the multiplayer, that’s the only thing I’ve been playing. All I wanted from this game was for it to be a now-gen BF2:MC, which so far, it is very close to being. I breezed through the single player demo once, and left unimpressed. It doesn’t look spetacular, the characters are borderline annoying, and the storyline is just south of being a complete “Three Kings” ripoff, but like I said before, I’m not concerned with that.

I was probably going to buy the game anyways, but this demo confirms that a purchase will be made.

Russ:
Not being one for FPS online multiplayer (it’s not you, it’s me) and having never played any Battlefield game before, I dove right into the single-player demo blind. My initial reaction was, “Hey this looks pretty gritty and real.” I like the speed of the controls, they seem really tight and frantic. I didn’t like that my health bar didn’t automatically regenerate - I guess I’ve been spoiled by the simplicity of modern FPS games. Can you control your teammates? I couldn’t figure out how to give them commands or anything, so we were each doing our own thing.

I’ll tell you right now that I’m not a fan of the vehicles yet. I was so impressed with how tight and fun the FPS part felt, but jumping into a vehicle felt like a step backwards. I don’t like that the left trigger button and bumper controlled the gas and brake, it seemed counterintuitive to me. And the right stick does nothing but control the camera - it’s useless. I know that nobody wants to be faulted for copying Halo; but come on, I like those vehicle controls best and I wouldn’t mind if this game followed suit. Then again, maybe the controls are customize-able, I didn’t check. Overall, I liked the game, and was impressed with it, but I will probably wait until it reaches the $40 mark before I buy it.

Tyler:
I played the demo for about an hour, trying to get familiar with the controls and learn the new features. And here is what I found. I love love love the explosions in the destrucible environments. This alone will make the game that much more replayable in the online arena. I also like the aesthetic, sort of Call of Duty, sort of Red Dawn. I like the graphics for what they are… not jaw-dropping or bar-raising but definitely not too shabby. I like being back in vehicles and laying C4 again.

I don’t like Sarge because he is unoriginal and has awful voice acting; he never raises his voice above a mild suggestive tone, not even during battles. I don’t like the smart-Ass-New-Yorker who convieniently knows all about the secret brotherhood of goldbrick-carrying mercenaries.  I don’t like the control layout (do they not understand that 80% of the people who will play this are coming straight from COD4 and will have to go through the frustration of relearning this ass-backwards control scheme? Make it customizeable). I don’t like the feel of the controls, they seem too blocky and robotic. There doesn’t seem to be any give when you move, like you are locked on to a grid.

I have to check out the multiplayer to really get an idea of this game though. For the moment, I guess the name of this game described the demo pretty well… BAD company.

Great Game, Bad Company

Earlier today, Tyler and I had a fairly lengthy converstation regarding many topics ranging from young, cut bottoms (mmmmm), to man-animals, and to our GTAIV gripes (forced police chases).

The thing we talked about that got me the most pumped though, was our anticipation of the next Battlefield game. I loved Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, but its decidedly last-gen qualities (especially when compared to newer games like COD4) make it very diffucult to play now. The next game in the time-period hopping FPS series, Battlefield: Bad Company is scheduled to release on June 23rd, and I have very high hopes for it. I don’t know if it will be a complete COD4 killer, but if the vehicles, helicopter-sniper drop offs, and C4-car bombings from BF2:MC are in it, then I’ll definitely be hot-swapping.

Of course, I’m only talking about the multiplayer here. I don’t really care about the campaign too much, although with something resembling an actual story in Bad Company, it might be worth a once-over.
