Under Construction: Day 12

I’m a modest (and brilliant) man, I don’t like to toot my own horn solely for the sake of recognition on most occasions. This is not one of those occasions.

To start with, go here.

See that? That is exactly what I did not want to do. I saw the above link the day I started working on the cab and it serves an excellent reminder to:

  • Not cut corners (figuratively, that is. Not literally… that would be wacky)
  • Take my time
  • As Jesus said, “measure twice and cut once”.

Under Construction: Day 7

Still got some painting and a couple of vinyl side panels to get printed so, no grand total is yet in sight. It’ll surely be less than $500 though. Pretty sweet deal for an arcade cabinet. So far I’ve got the cpu MAMEing and need only to buy a cheap joystick to splice the arcade buttons (still en route from Ebay) through.

I’m sort of stuck as far as what art I want to put on the thing. I don’t want to design it after a real game or anything… thinking something original. Any ideas what I should put on the sides?

My Faves: Arcade Games

Yeah, I know. Kind of overdoing it on the whole “Arcade thing” aren’t we Tyler? Well, this was a post I’ve had on the back burner for a while; I even took pictures in person of one of my favorite games at a nearby theater. Now if we could only find an arcade game that would award you with achievements…

#5: Any Metal Slug

Games don’t always have to deliver eye-popping graphics and deep, emotionally compelling stories. Like all men, sometimes I just want to knife giant, rocket-totting crab bosses and and kill aliens with my blood-puke while being aided by an orangutan in a diaper wielding a revolver.

Under Construction: Day 5

Didn’t get as much done as I wanted due to a friend visiting in from out of own. Still, it’s coming together at a nice rate. Coin door, and pushbuttons are on the way as of last night, but I’m having trouble picking out the joystiq joystiCK. There are enough colors and models to make your head spin (spin, or swim? Never really thought about that before). At any rate, speaker holes are bored, monitor is bought ($25, thank you Craigslist) and plexiglass is ready to be scored.

Under Construction: I’m doing it

I’m building an arcade cabinet. A Defender upright arcade cabinet, to be precise.

I’ve always wanted to have an old school arcade game in my house since I saw “Big” and now I have the tools, the time and the wherewithal to actually construct a MAME cabinet. But, don’t expect this to be a quick, overnight operation. I expect a difficulty and pain as I put saw to wood, and hammer to thumb. I’m going to provide quick snippets and status updates through the site as the project comes along. Expect photos soon.
