Review: Free iPhone App - IGN Reviews

IGN.com has made a free iPhone app that lets you read their reviews without wasting time (and bandwidth) on their graphic-intense website. It has its share of shortcomings, but instant access to their back catalog is quick and easy.

Each review features a quick summary, scores for each category, the full review, and a conclusion. They load really quickly, too. You can filter your reviews by system; but unfortunately, previous-generation machines aren’t available. Also, it doesn’t allow you to access their movie, TV and music reviews, but then again IGN.com seems to really miss the mark for those categories so it may be for the better.

So if you’re sitting at a GameStop and you want to make a quick assessment of whether or not the latest Cabella’s game is worth your cash (it isn’t), this may be a time and money saver for you. I just hope they update the app sometime down the line with older systems’ reviews, “best of” lists, and video reviews.

Review: Free iPhone App - Restaurant Nutrition

I found this free iPhone app yesterday which is pretty neat. It lets you pull data from most restaurant chains and look at the nutritional data for their menu items. Although that’s all neat and dandy, that doesn’t warrant a threevue review - but its other features do.

In the ever-changing world of fast food, new items are added and old are removed, and this app has a quick “update” feature that keeps you up to date with their menus, without having to update the entire app. That’s efficient and helpful, so thanks. Next, you can have multiple profiles and keep a log of what you eat each day - and the app calculates how many calories you’ve eaten, etc. And finally, you can select a restaurant and press the “map” button and it’ll find the closest one for you. Not too shabby. It kinda makes me want to eat more fast food.

You can download it here.

My Faves: Best iPhone App So Far: NetNewsWire

I’ve been using an application called NetNewsWire for the past five months. It’s an RSS feed reader, which allows you to subscribe to multiple blog/RSS-based websites (like this one) and view them all at once instead of going to each individual site. It syncs with NewsGator, an online RSS reader, which means you can either read your feeds at home on your computer or online at newsgator.com and it’ll remember which feeds you have read and which you haven’t. It has a PC version called FeedDemon, too. Did I mention that this is all completely free?

If that wasn’t enough, they have released a free iPhone application that keeps me even more connected. As you can see from the picture above, it lists all the feeds you’re subscribed to (all automatically, no need to re-input anything) and lets you read them on a very sleek interface. And it syncs with the computer application and online reader, which means you can read your feeds on any one of the three interfaces and it’ll remember everything.

First Impressions - iPhone 3G (updated)

What you see above is a picture of my new, white, 16GB 3G iPhone. The iPhone itself isn’t in the box, because, well, I used it to take the picture you see above.

My brother-in-law and I got in line at 7am and didn’t walk out of the store until 11am. I didn’t count how many people were in line, but there were a couple hundred AHEAD of us, and just as many behind.

iPhone iPartay

Well folks, the eve of the 3G iPhone is upon us, and I will be at the Ala Moana Apple Store at 7am tomorrow morning to get my hands on one. I’m going for the 16GB model, but I haven’t decided on a color yet. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, really. I figure there will be a pretty large line by then, but I don’t want to wake up any earlier than that. See you there?

New iPhone Resolution: My Address Book

I’m going to be at an AT&T store at 8am on July 11th to get my hands on the new iPhone. Until then, I’m listing all the ways I hope this new gadget will improve my life:

I plan on getting my Mac’s address book in pitch-perfect form, which will sync with my iPhone. I want all of my friends added, along with their phone numbers, email addresses, mailing addresses and birthdays/anniversaries (which will integrate with my iCal, pretty sweet). And a badass picture of you that shows up any time you call me.

Yeah, I want to be that guy that actually calls you on your birthday. Crazy idea, huh?

New iPhone Resolution: Organized Pictures

I’m going to be at an AT&T store at 8am on July 11th to get my hands on the new iPhone. Until then, I’m listing all the ways I hope this new gadget will improve my life:

I already have my pictures pretty well organized in iPhoto, but I want to have some of my favorite galleries on my iPhone, too. We have some pretty awesome wedding photos, and I have some gruesomely sweet surgery photos, and I like the idea of whipping them out at any time. It’s like how people used to keep pictures in their wallets, but zoomable.

If you want to see the pictures I’m talking about, you can see some of them here (the page doesn’t work with Firefox 3 yet, though).

New iPhone Resolution: Apps and More

I’m going to be at an AT&T store at 8am on July 11th to get my hands on the new iPhone. Until then, I’m listing all the ways I hope this new gadget will improve my life:

There are going to be a ton of 3rd party applications for the iPhone, and I can’t really say what will be available yet. Aside from games, there looks to be a few neat ones coming, like a universal TV remote. I also plan on updating my tweeter feed on a daily basis, from my iPhone.

I like the idea of the App Store, and being able to buy things on the go.

New iPhone Resolution: Podcasts

I’m going to be at an AT&T store at 8am on July 11th to get my hands on the new iPhone. Until then, I’m listing all the ways I hope this new gadget will improve my life:

I don’t listen to podcasts. I probably only sync my iPod once a week, and I prefer to listen to music for the most part anyway. However, lately I have felt like I should be listening to gaming podcasts, especially because we hope to start up one of our own someday.

Since I will be syncing my iPhone daily to charge it and update my calendar/notes, I think I’ll start subscribing to podcasts, starting with Joystiq’s. It’s the least I could do for them, since they have name-dropped us a couple times already.

New iPhone Resolution: Calendar

I’m going to be at an AT&T store at 8am on July 11th to get my hands on the new iPhone. Until then, I’m listing all the ways I hope this new gadget will improve my life:

I’ve owned a Mac for about a year and a half now, and I’m sorry to say that my iCal application is woefully underused. I could only update it on my computer, and couldn’t access it from any other computer. It would sync with my iPod, but it was read-only, so I couldn’t update it or anything. I used Google’s calendar for a while instead, since I could update it from anywhere, but it didn’t sync with my iPod so it was no help. In the end, I just gave up altogether.

Not anymore. I plan on using my calendar to update the things I have the hardest time remembering - my gazzilion medical appointments. Also, I hope to set up a reminder feature to make sure I take my damn medications every morning and evening - you wouldn’t believe how easily I forget to take them. Hopefully with a little reminder thingamajig in my pocket at all times, I won’t miss any more appointments or meds.

New iPhone Resolution: GPS

I’m going to be at an AT&T store at 8am on July 11th to get my hands on the new iPhone. Until then, I’m listing all the ways I hope this new gadget will improve my life:

Another gadget I’ve held off on buying is a GPS. Mainly because I live in Hawaii - how am I going to get lost? - but also because I had a feeling that it would eventually be integrated into the iPhone.

I borrowed a GPS for a cross-country road trip last year, and it was awesome. I was able to search for restaurants in unknown towns, and plan my trip based on nearby gas stations. My wife and I are moving to the mainland (Maryland) in a couple months, and it’s an entirely new area for the both of us. Having the iPhone’s built-in GPS makes me a little more at ease.

New iPhone Resolution: Getting Things Done (GTD)

I’m going to be at an AT&T store at 8am on July 11th to get my hands on the new iPhone. Until then, I’m listing all the ways I hope this new gadget will improve my life:

Although there are a slew of GTD programs out there (especially for Mac owners), I’ve never used them. They seem counter-productive; how is me sitting in front of my computer planning out every little action going to help me get anything done any faster?

I do plan on using Apple’s “Notes” application on my iPhone, though - because the idea of jotting down a quick note to remind myself to do something seems like a great idea. Song lyrics, threevue ideas and names of guys girls to do google image searches on later all seem that much more tangible. Plus, you can email your notes to people (or yourself) easily, from what I hear.

New iPhone Resolution: An Introduction

Call me a nerd, fanboy, or total stud, but I plan on being at an AT&T store at 8am on July 11th to get my hands on the new 3G iPhone. I don’t own the soon-to-be-old iPhone; I waited it out for something with a faster connection and lower sticker price.

Now, the iPhone has been around for a while, and I’ve had a lot of time to imagine how it’s going to improve my life. So, for the next five days I will be posting “New iPhone Resolutions” - which will list the ways I hope the iPhone will make things easier.

Dear Windows,

It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter blog to you. I know we had some good times, and no matter what happens, you were my first, and no one can take that away. I don’t regret anything we ever did together. The memories of some of the the sites we visited and things we saw, even the things you warned me against downloading, will forever hold a place in my heart, and I’ll never forget you for that.

But, as time goes on, people change, and I just don’t think you’re the one for me anymore. My friends have been warning me about you lately, saying that you’re outdated, you cause too many problems, and there are much better options out there for me. I tried hard not to listen to them and remain faithful to you, but honestly, I don’t think I can forgive you for what you did to me last week. Did you really think you could get away with purging yourself of all my files, pictures, music, and everything else I entrusted to you and get away with it? Did you think that inviting all the viruses and pop-ups into our lives would spice things up? Well, they didn’t. They left me brokenhearted, betrayed, and made me realize that it’s time for me to find something new.

So, I’ve found someone else. It’s been a difficult transition so far, but I think it will be much better for me in the long run. Please understand where I’m coming from, and don’t make this anymore difficult than it has to be. Let my new MacBook and me live in peace, and let’s at least try and remain friends.

Moving on,

Mark

Yet Another 3G iPhone Post

The internet is probably chock-full of 3G iPhone blogs by now, so I don’t want to clutter our tubes any more than I need to.

But I do want to say that the $199 price tag on the new iPhone is ridiculously awesome. I was hoping it would go down to $299, but $199 is incredible. I will be in line on July 11th to get my hands on one.

I’m so glad that I held out this long to get an iPhone.
