My Faves/My Gripes: Six Best, Worst Rock Band 2 Tracks

Okay, so the whole on-disc tracklist for Rock Band 2 came out today. There are a total of 84 tracks - some good, some bad. Here are the six I’m looking forward to the most, and the six I’m dreading the most:

My Faves
Beck - “E-Pro”
Fleetwood Mac - “Go Your Own Way”
Foo Fighters - “Everlong”
Modest Mouse - “Float On”
Nirvana - “Drain You” (Wait, does this mean it’s not coming as DLC?)
Soundgarden - “Spoonman” (ALL MY FRIENDS ARE INDIANS!!!)

My Gripes
Disturbed - “Down with the Sickness”
Dream Theater - “Panic Attack”
Guns N’ Roses - “Shackler’s Revenge”

My Faves: Best iPhone App So Far: NetNewsWire

I’ve been using an application called NetNewsWire for the past five months. It’s an RSS feed reader, which allows you to subscribe to multiple blog/RSS-based websites (like this one) and view them all at once instead of going to each individual site. It syncs with NewsGator, an online RSS reader, which means you can either read your feeds at home on your computer or online at newsgator.com and it’ll remember which feeds you have read and which you haven’t. It has a PC version called FeedDemon, too. Did I mention that this is all completely free?

If that wasn’t enough, they have released a free iPhone application that keeps me even more connected. As you can see from the picture above, it lists all the feeds you’re subscribed to (all automatically, no need to re-input anything) and lets you read them on a very sleek interface. And it syncs with the computer application and online reader, which means you can read your feeds on any one of the three interfaces and it’ll remember everything.

My Faves: Top Six XBLA Ports

Although Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) service brings new and innovative indie titles like Undertow and Aegis Wing to gamers, it’s mostly a fan service medium. By that I mean that the most downloaded games are overwhelmingly ports of games that have been out on other platforms.

That being said, here are my six favorite XBLA ports:

My Faves: Top Six Nintendo Gamecube Games for Wii Owners

It’s no secret that lots of people own the Nintendo Wii, or at least want to get their hands on one. Many of the Wii’s newest owners are non-gamers, and may not even be aware that you can play Nintendo Gamecube games on the Wii (provided you buy a Gamecube controller and memory card). I, however, was a big fan of the Gamecube because I was a very casual player during the last generation, and Nintendo’s little purple cube suited my needs perfectly.

So for those of you out there that may own a Wii but never tapped into the Gamecube, here’s my pick for titles to pick up and start a Gamecube library. Please note that I didn’t include Paper Mario, Resident Evil 4, Mario Kart and Metroid: Prime, because (superior) iterations of those games are available on the Wii already.

Potential My Gripe or My Fave: Rock Band DLC Song Transfers (Updated)

Update: YESSS! Rock Band 2 was just announced, and that “all the current and future DLC will be compatible with both versions of Rock Band, as well as the same instrument controllers” - so put this in the “my faves” grouping.

I have to hand it to Rock Band-developers Harmonix - they’ve always done right by me. Whereas I feel gypped by the monster that is Activision and Guitar Hero III, Harmonix has always seemed to give us what we want (but sometimes not when we want it). Their DLC songs are cheaper (and usually better than the crappola offered by GHIII), and the full-album DLC idea is just about awesome.

But we’re at a crossroads, folks, and I bet you didn’t even know it. What happens to all my DLC content when Rock Band 2 comes out? I have at least 30 songs downloaded so far, and I’m sure there’ll be more to come. Considering that the average song costs $2, that’s $60 in DLC investment alone. It would be awesome if I can play the songs that I already paid for in Rock Band 2 (maybe even with whatever new features the RB2 will have?). I don’t want to have to pop the old Rock Band back into my Xbox 360 just to play some old songs - I want them to follow me to my new profile. Let me build a DLC library!

My Faves: Top Six (Actually) Classic Albums For Rock Band - Indie 90s Edition

I, like Tyler, feel that the folks behind Rock Band may not truly understand what a “classic” album is. Judas Priest? No, sir. That being said, I’m here to give them a little free advice, in the form of lists of albums that should become fully-downloadable DLC albums.

The 90s are when things get heated. Everyone’s got an opinion. We’re still feeling the reverberations of this decade, and I can see this list changing over the years. I had a hard time fitting only six albums into one list, so I split them by popular releases and indie titles. This is the indie list. Let the comments flow:

My Faves: Mark At The Movies

Here I am, back with the fruit of my blogging looms, My Faves. This is a good one, too, because now, after knowing my five favorite movies, and five favorite TV shows, you’ll know where 95% of the things that come out of my mouth came from (what goes in my mouth is a whooooole other story).

Lights! Camera! Action!

1. Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1993).

I remember being a kid watching this in the theater and being in complete awe of what I was seeing before me. There is yet to be a movie that has sucked me in as much as this one, and although it’s definitely aged a little in the past 15(!) years, it’s still looks and sounds great, and makes me feel 11 again.

Favorite quote:
Lex: “He left us. He left us!”
Dr. Grant: “But that’s not…what I’m gonna do.” Continue reading ‘My Faves: Mark At The Movies’

Demotopia!/Cheapskate/My Faves: Top Six Xbox 360 Demos

Listen. I know that Microsoft charges $50/year for their Xbox Live Gold membership, allowing you access to their robust online system. But did you know that every new Xbox 360 comes with a free Silver membership, which allows you to interact with friends (just not in games) and access to the Xbox Live Marketplace (XBLM), where you can download media for free?

What I’m getting at are the free demos you can download in XBLM. Currently, there are 158 to choose from. Here are my six favorite, in alphabetical order. Keep in mind that these are my favorite demos available, and are not reflections on the final games themselves:

My Faves: Top Six (Actually) Classic Albums For Rock Band - 80s Edition

I, like Tyler, feel that the folks behind Rock Band may not truly understand what a “classic” album is. Judas Priest? No, sir. That being said, I’m here to give them a little free advice, in the form of lists of albums that should become fully-downloadable DLC albums.

Unlike my 70s list, my 80s list is influenced a little more by the singles that some of these albums produced, and I would be okay with skipping a couple tracks from each of these records. I must also admit that The Pixies’ Doolittle would have made this list if it wasn’t already dropping next week.

Onward, 80s!

Let’s take a page from the 1970s first, okay?

Review / My Faves / My Gripes: Rock Band’s Album Selection

When news first hit way back in July 07 at E3 that Rock Band would provide full length albums as DLC, all of our heads were bedazzled with thoughts of getting to play whole LPs like Weezer’s “Blue Album” and Ini Kamoze’s self-titled debut, featuring the record shattering hit “Hot Stepper”.

Sadly, the first album released was Judas Priest’s “Screaming For Vengence”… Not a good start. I think I and every other literate, halfway intelligent non-mouthbreathing person on the Earth collectively sighed and did a slow, Three Stooges-esque face wipe in disbelief. My hopes of playing either classic rock anthems or late 90’s punk/alt/rock were dashed by patent leather and studded bracelets. I hate when people go for the low hanging fruit of track selection that is Heavy Metal. Prime example: KISS. I hate KISS. You know why? Because everyone knows who they are, but no one knows their songs. People think KISS and they think make up and costumes, not classic rock. Name me two KISS songs. “I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night (And Party Every Day)”, and…? What? That’s right, nothing. Because they suck. Now, name me one Judas Priest song. “Breaking the Law”? Good job, you must have watched Beavis and Butthead when you were younger. The same goes for The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd to a certain extent.

NOTE: Snail Face = Bad

Screaming for Vengeance gets 5/5 Snail Faces

My Faves: Top Six PNW-Based Singer/Songwriters

Although I’ve lived in Hawaii for the past seven years, and I’m moving to D.C. in a few months, I’ve always considered Washington state home. Spent my first twenty years there, I did. And amazingly enough, through sheer insistence I have kept my ear to the Seattle music scene over the years (thanks mostly to the internet and friends that still live there). The Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho) has always been a breeding ground for rock musicians, and singer/songwriters in particular. Here are my favorites.

A few names aren’t here for a reason. Singer/Songwriters that play predominantly in full bands but play solo sometimes weren’t considered (Sunny Day Real Estate’s Jeremy Enigk, Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, etc), as well as musicians that made names for themselves elsewhere but relocated to the PNW (Luke Temple, Silver Scooter’s Scott Garred, Spoon’s Britt Daniel).

My Faves: Top Six Bad Singers

Damn you, Bob Dylan. Your inability to sing was overshadowed by your great songwriting, but nowadays anyone thinks they can sing in a band. And it’s all thanks to you.

Thankfully, some of the more modern bad singers are actually pretty good. My six favorite:

My Faves: 5 Best Franchise Reboots

This week I’m publishing a three-part series concerning franchise reboots (you know, when a series gets “reinvigorated”/”reinvented” rather than work on a new IP). Here are what I consider the five worst reboots, followed below by the five best reboots, and finally five games that could use a sequel.

These are the ones that got it right. And honestly, to create a stellar game is probably really hard work; but to create a stellar game that stays true to something made a long time ago has probably got to be even harder. So my hat’s off to the following:
