Don’t Quit You Day Job, Musicians… Of Making Millions And Millions Of Dollars With Minumum Effort

Shirt Woot has this little darling up for sale a few days ago. If you can’t tell, it’s a pixelated Michael Jackson (pre-Two Face incident). Oh, for the good old days when Michael lent his sprite based likeness to the Moonwalker game by Sega back in 1990.

Fear it…

It got me thinking. When was the last time a MEGA BIG musician did a MEGA BIG game tie in? Aerosmith was just featured as the main band in the newest Guitar Hero (COUGHexpansionpackCOUGH), but it sold moderately well at best and wasn’t nearly as Xtreme! as Revolution X.

So what fruits have been borne from the combination of musicians and game designers, that may be shown without shame. Are there any big musi-game mergers on the horizon? And does the rambling epic Shaq-Fu count? Below you will find an example of just what evil can come of such an unholy union…

Vampire Weekday

Last night’s threevue.com writer meet-up and Vampire Weekend show was a lot of fun. The venue, Pipeline Cafe, is as lame as the name makes it out to be, but has surprisingly good sound, and both friends of threevue, Linus, and VW sounded great.

Russ brought up a great point at the end of the show when he said how much he disliked the obligatory encore song after they’ve already said goodnight and have walked off-stage. Then they waste about two minutes of our time just to walk back out and play the one song from their set that they haven’t played yet.

I appreciate when a band says, “This is our last song, goodnight!” Then they play it, and they leave, wasting not my time.

Hay fanz, just wanted to let you know that there will be a threevue.com writer meet-up tonight. Invitees include myself and Mark Hill. We’ll be watching the increasingly-popular Vampire Weekend and local friends and DDRU2-featured Linus (whose frontman frequents this site, btw/ftw) live tonight at the Pipeline Cafe in Honolulu.

You are definitely not invited. See you there!

My Faves/My Gripes: Six Best, Worst Rock Band 2 Tracks

Okay, so the whole on-disc tracklist for Rock Band 2 came out today. There are a total of 84 tracks - some good, some bad. Here are the six I’m looking forward to the most, and the six I’m dreading the most:

My Faves
Beck - “E-Pro”
Fleetwood Mac - “Go Your Own Way”
Foo Fighters - “Everlong”
Modest Mouse - “Float On”
Nirvana - “Drain You” (Wait, does this mean it’s not coming as DLC?)
Soundgarden - “Spoonman” (ALL MY FRIENDS ARE INDIANS!!!)

My Gripes
Disturbed - “Down with the Sickness”
Dream Theater - “Panic Attack”
Guns N’ Roses - “Shackler’s Revenge”
Linkin Park - “One Step Closer”
Panic at the Disco - “Nine in the Afternoon”
Steely Dan - “Bodhitsattva”
…plus all of the “Bonus Songs”

Rockin’ In The Fake World

I’ve had a Rock Band resurgence in my life lately, due to some friends that have come over to my apartment ready to rokk. I even downloaded the B-52’s “Roam” yesterday, so a fellow rock star and I could play it for the first time at the same time. This has me pretty excited about any forthcoming Rock Band 2 announcements that may come out this week’s E3.

One interesting (though not completely awesome) thing I read on Xbox 360 Fanboy just now, is that the Madden 09 soundtrack will be available as DLC in the form of a few songs being released a week. There aren’t many specifics regarding the deal like price or anything, but the Madden 09 soundtrack has been released, and there is absolutely nothing that I would even consider downloading from it.

Deadelus - Fair Weather Friends

Do you like this video? I do, because I have superb taste.

Made by Jordan Kim in only about 500 hours, it’s a testament to serious After Effect skills and a death wish towards his eyeballs and mouse clicking hand. It’s no secret on this site that I LOVE RAINBOWS!!!

Potential My Gripe or My Fave: Rock Band DLC Song Transfers (Updated)

Update: YESSS! Rock Band 2 was just announced, and that “all the current and future DLC will be compatible with both versions of Rock Band, as well as the same instrument controllers” - so put this in the “my faves” grouping.

I have to hand it to Rock Band-developers Harmonix - they’ve always done right by me. Whereas I feel gypped by the monster that is Activision and Guitar Hero III, Harmonix has always seemed to give us what we want (but sometimes not when we want it). Their DLC songs are cheaper (and usually better than the crappola offered by GHIII), and the full-album DLC idea is just about awesome.

But we’re at a crossroads, folks, and I bet you didn’t even know it. What happens to all my DLC content when Rock Band 2 comes out? I have at least 30 songs downloaded so far, and I’m sure there’ll be more to come. Considering that the average song costs $2, that’s $60 in DLC investment alone. It would be awesome if I can play the songs that I already paid for in Rock Band 2 (maybe even with whatever new features the RB2 will have?). I don’t want to have to pop the old Rock Band back into my Xbox 360 just to play some old songs - I want them to follow me to my new profile. Let me build a DLC library!

My Faves: Top Six (Actually) Classic Albums For Rock Band - Indie 90s Edition

I, like Tyler, feel that the folks behind Rock Band may not truly understand what a “classic” album is. Judas Priest? No, sir. That being said, I’m here to give them a little free advice, in the form of lists of albums that should become fully-downloadable DLC albums.

The 90s are when things get heated. Everyone’s got an opinion. We’re still feeling the reverberations of this decade, and I can see this list changing over the years. I had a hard time fitting only six albums into one list, so I split them by popular releases and indie titles. This is the indie list. Let the comments flow:

Lollapalooza 2008

I was fortunate enough to be near Chicago in the summer of ‘05, and caught that year’s iteration/revival of Lollapalooza. I had a good time, and saw some fine bands - The Arcade Fire, Blonde Redhead, Weezer, The Pixies, Spoon, Death Cab for Cutie, Trail of Dead, and Ben Kweller come to mind. Oh, and Billy Idol.

This year’s lineup is especially enticing, and it makes me want to fly out just to catch it. Although the third day has only one truly essential show for me (Iron & Wine). Some highlights:

Friday, August 1st:
Rogue Wave, The Go! Team, Jeff Tweedy (kid’s tent), Grizzly Bear, Bloc Party, Steve Malkmus and the Jicks, Radiohead

Saturday, August 2nd:
Okkervil River, Broken Social Scene, The Toadies (you know you want it), Rage Against the Machine, Wilco

Sunday, August 3rd:
Black Kids, Iron & Wine, The National, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West

It’s $205 for a three-day pass, or $80/day.

My Faves: Top Six (Actually) Classic Albums For Rock Band - 80s Edition

I, like Tyler, feel that the folks behind Rock Band may not truly understand what a “classic” album is. Judas Priest? No, sir. That being said, I’m here to give them a little free advice, in the form of lists of albums that should become fully-downloadable DLC albums.

Unlike my 70s list, my 80s list is influenced a little more by the singles that some of these albums produced, and I would be okay with skipping a couple tracks from each of these records. I must also admit that The Pixies’ Doolittle would have made this list if it wasn’t already dropping next week.

Onward, 80s!

Where Will You Be June 17th?

Besides at my band’s first public appearance?

Mozilla has declared June 17th as the official “download day” for version 3.0 of their beloved web browser, Firefox. They’re trying to set a Guiness World Record for most-downloaded software in one day, and I think I will be participating.

I’ve used Safari for the past year or so, but sometimes I feel like it could be a little faster. The surfing is fast and I’ve become accustomed to it, but sometimes it feels real laggy. Maybe Firefox 3 will solve these issues? We’ll find out soon.

So download Firefox 3 on the 17th, and then come to the Next Door on 43N Hotel Street in Honolulu at 9pm and watch Oh the Possibilities rock your socks off and then tell me what you think of Firefox.

My Faves: Top Six PNW-Based Singer/Songwriters

Although I’ve lived in Hawaii for the past seven years, and I’m moving to D.C. in a few months, I’ve always considered Washington state home. Spent my first twenty years there, I did. And amazingly enough, through sheer insistence I have kept my ear to the Seattle music scene over the years (thanks mostly to the internet and friends that still live there). The Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho) has always been a breeding ground for rock musicians, and singer/songwriters in particular. Here are my favorites.

A few names aren’t here for a reason. Singer/Songwriters that play predominantly in full bands but play solo sometimes weren’t considered (Sunny Day Real Estate’s Jeremy Enigk, Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, etc), as well as musicians that made names for themselves elsewhere but relocated to the PNW (Luke Temple, Silver Scooter’s Scott Garred, Spoon’s Britt Daniel).

Lovehandles - Yes Yes Oui Oui

Taking a second to spread some love. My friend Tommy plays music under the moniker of lovehandles and made the video above to one of his songs, “Yes Yes Oui Oui”, and it’s pretty damn awesome. Have a watch/listen, let him know what you think on his myspace page.
