George Lucas Should Be Spinning In His Grave

For some reason I was really excited to see the new Star Trek. I have never sat through an entire Star Trek film, especially on opening night in a theater, but I used to watch episodes of The Next Generation at home alone when my dad worked nights, but that’s about the extent of my Trexperience.

None of that matters though, because this is a completely new and fresh take on the universe. Someone that knows nothing about the lore can watch this movie and be entertained the entire time, and not feel lost in a bunch of Trek jargon, just ask my girlfriend. It has one great scene after another from the beginning to the end, sprinkled with some highly unexpected bits of comedy throughout served up by a great cast. Especially Simon Pegg, who comes in late, and steals every scene he’s in thereafter.

That’s one of the best things about how this movie was made; they don’t cram all the old favorite characters down your throat as quickly and with as little emotion as possible. All characters are introduced in a proper order with good spacing between them, avoiding a “here’s Sulu! Now here’s Uhura! Now here’s Scotty!” scenario. Of course, many of the classic Star Trek lines are wedged in, but they’re done tastefully and for the most part don’t feel forced, and honestly, needed to be there.

One last thing I want to say about it: If you know me, you know that I’m a Star Wars fanboy through and through, and for a moment I felt like I had to keep my head undercover as I walked into the theater like a guy walking into the adult video room of Carmen Video. But as I watched this movie, I had a very sick feeling in my stomach. It was the feeling that as Star Wars continues to get worse, Star Trek is getting better. Seriously, every time a new Star Wars comes out, e.g. Episodes 1-3, and all the animated junk, the name gets tarnished a little more. But if Star Trek stays on its current course and continues to put out films of this quality, it’s bad news for a galaxy far, far away. At least the Star Wars games are better…well, maybe not.

Carmen video (rip) is an American institution! No shame. No shame at all. I’m actually starting to get pumped to see this movie and I hated the show. I also hated kcop los angeles, and upn.
