The fellas behind 1337pwn Xbox Live Friends App have created an NXE-friendly app, called 1337pwn iNXES Xbox Live Friend App. Although it’s a bit of a mouthful, it’s a pretty sweet app.
You can browse your friends (which you have to manually input – which is a both a good and bad thing since you can be selective about who you want to see) in an NXE-style manner, and see what they’re up to when you’re unlucky enough to be in a situation where you can’t play online. You can even see in-depth data on them:

You are supposed to be able to send them Xbox msgs too, but it wouldn’t work for me. Also, it shows what the most-played games on the Xbox 360 are right now, too. All this for the sweet price of free.

I gotta say, I was pretty happy with the original app. It’s funny how the new interface for the 1337Pwn iphone app, like the NXE itself, is just a bunch of extra stuff. The old one gives me everything that I need without all of the gimmicky, extraneous, load-heavy stuff. I really only want to know who is online and what they are playing.
You’re right, it is a bit slower than the previous app thanks to all the graphics. But the old app wouldn’t ever update gamerpics, which was annoying.
