Getting Red Ringed is a lot like getting herpes: you never think it’s going to happen to you until it’s too late, and when it does, you’re left bored and alone.

Damn!!! Sorry to hear that, but if it makes you feel better, I think mine is going to break soon cuz it has been freezing at random times this month.
That’s exactly what mine was doing right before it kicked the bucket. Has your done it once already?
Yup, last year when I fired up Bioshock for the first time, i was about to enter Rapture and poof red ring! Lucky for me they gave me a refurbished one in less than a month. You can play mine when i get back to hawaii next friday. We can play Bionic Commando!
Sweet. Tyler came up with the good idea of doing to ol’ gamestop shuffle with a used system to hold me over until I get mine back. Seems risky, though.
“what am I going to play now, Wii? Not likely!”
Lol. The last game I bought for Wii was No More Heroes, and there isn’t anything that looks good on the horizon. Grim!
That’s pretty bad luck man. I’ve had my Xbox for nearly 2 years and no problems so far; well, OK it does go through phases where the disc drive refuses to open, and I get the occasional disc read error/ freeze up, but no RROD so far (note: my 360 did NOT like Mass Effect at all – it froze up all the time during that)
It makes me kinda nervous though; if it lasts another year, then I’ll be screwed if it does RROD as it’ll be out of warranty.
You could have done the towel trick for a week until term starts again, then sent it back, but it seems like a lot of work for such a sketchy payoff.
Well something is clearly wrong with my 360, i am getting more freezes when i play Bionic Commando and even getting “disc unreadable” messages which suprises me since this game has NO DISC!
I got mine for Xmas last year, so luckily it’s still under warranty. What’s the towel trick?
Just got back from customer support, they told me to have it plugged directly into wall. Same stuff keeps happening and they want me to pay 99 DOLLARS for repair since it is not the RROD. Don’t know what to do.
Try and make it red ring somehow. I don’t know if that’s possible, though.
The towel trick is where you wrap the 360 in a couple of thick towels and switch it on for about an hour. You then switch it off, unwrap it and let it sit for about 30 mins to cool down. Usually when you switch it back on it works again, though only for, like, a day or something.
It’s rumoured that most RROD’s are cases where the solder that holds down the CPU melts and the CPU comes loose – the towel trick apparently melts the solder again temporarily re-seats the CPU.
Search on joystiq for it; I know they posted a video once (a while back) where Cheapy D from Cheap Ass Gamer filmed the process. I don’t think it voids the warranty as you’re not actually opening up the case. Like I said though, it seems like a lot of work for such a short term fix.
Raul, yeah MS are a*sholes when it comes down to repairs as it’s only the RROD that’s covered for 3 years. Any other fault such as a faulty disc drive, or any other general hardware fault and you have to pay for repairs.
Well it frequently freezes when I play an XBLA game such as Bionic Commando RA, I’ll give the 360 a break til tommorow when Lost Odyssey and Guitar Hero Aerosmith arrive from Gamefly. I’ll play as much as I can and start Bionic Commando next week to see any improvements. If 360 don’t Red Ring till the mid September I may just cough up the dough to repair it.
Update! It has just froze on the dashboard after I was having a private chat with Tyler. After I turned it off I touched the console and it is really hot, after being on for 15 minutes. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I am getting the RROD soon and I AM HAPPY!!!!
Yesss! Congratulations!
