Is Somebody Being A Little Too Nice?

IGN, you really know how to rub a guy the wrong way (see Mark’s RSV2 review to see the right way). They made such a fuss when GTAIV came out and they gave it a 10 out of 10. “It’s our first 10.0 review since Soul Calibur in 1999!!” - I even wrote about it. What a monumental occasion, right? I mean, they only give out 10s every nine years….right?

But then they just gave Metal Gear Solid 4 a 10.0?!? I’m not here to argue that point really, but only this - if they keep throwing out 10s any time a big-name product delivers, they are going to lose some serious credibility. MGS4 may be a great game, and I won’t find out until it’s ported or I get a PS3, but I cannot imagine it being a 10.0 game. Did they fix all those annoying things from the other games, or are we supposed to forgive them, since they’re now part of Kojima’s “style”?

By the way, 10.0 means perfect. Keep that in mind. Oh, and they gave a 10.0 to the latest Avatar episode yesterday, too. Something’s wrong here.

I totally agree 100%. Although IGN is much better in my opinion than Gamespot, I do also think its stupid them giving 10/10 to all the big name games. I havnt played the new metal gear solid yet but I have GTA IV on PS3 and i really personally would give it about a 7/10.

I would give GTA4 an 8 because they took out all the crazy stuff I liked: katanas, tanks, etc. I am at Act 4 in MGS 4 and I’m loving it but I don’t like the mandatory install times that u have to wait between EVERY act. I’m also tired of not being able to play through Codec calls. You are just listening on an earpiece why can’t I still move around? I wish it was more like Bioshock where the radio stuff was in the background while u were playing.

I think all these high scores come from two factors. The first one is excited shock of a new game in a mega popular series, so when the reviewers play it at the beginning, the are just so pumped to be playing another MGS or GTA that they look over many little imperfections.

Second, I think the quality of games across the board is simply much higher now than they’ve ever been, and many reviewers are judging curret-gen games against last-gen ones, artificially inflating the score a little.

And I agree with Russ, I haven’t played a “perfect” game yet.
