I really don’t get why World of Warcraft/WoW is still so popular. I am listening to the BBPS.com podcast right now (featuring friend of threevue, Nerfgun from Citizen Game), and they are talking about the life-sucking RPG. The game as we know it came out way back in November 2004, which in the age of modern gaming was about 1,000 years ago, but there are still no less 10 million WoWies carpal-tunneling their way across the fields of Azeroth every day.
I’m pretty sure none of us here at threevue have ever played it; I don’t like RPG’s, Russ doesn’t have the time, and Tyler’s computer came over on the Mayflower, so I’m not judging it, I just don’t see how it can still be so appealing to the gaming community.

I’m already paying 50 dollars a year for xbox live, I don’t need to pay 15 dollars a month for this.
Don’t the new updates also update the graphics? I have no idea, that’s just what I thought. People are still into it because it’s fundamentally a medium to collect things, and if they stop playing, they’ll lose all the stuff they collected. Or even worse, some other dude will collect cool new stuff instead.
Yeah, and think of all the Chinese gold farmers that would be put out of work if the world stopped playing. We don’t want that.
Hey, Dan here from the podcast in question! I’m sure I could go on some lengthy explanation about why I personally enjoy WoW but I think in my case it comes down to 2 things
1. It reminds me a lot of when I used to play Dungeons and Dragons as a kid, which I’ve always missed and really enjoyed. Not to mention that the game is so huge (and getting bigger as they patch it) that you can always find something new to do.
2. The community aspect of playing with friends. It’s similar to XBL.
But that’s just me. It’s definitely a game you could go overboard with (with all the collecting and trying to be “the best” but for me it’s just another game that I enjoy playing.
Good answer
Agreed, I hadn’t considered the community aspect in WoW. What personally keeps me from playing is the fact that there is no real end to the game (I like my stories) and I don’t like to play games on a computer. When there is a lauded MMO on the console, I may give it a whirl.
I play WOW. I love it. 32 female with two kids.
I am home because i have kids in bed at night. Once the dishes are done and the laundry is done and the house is quiet.. i could curl up and watch tv, read (which I already do alot of ) or I can log in with my friends and family and play.
Since the expansions there is endless things to do.. achievements, quests, new battlegrounds.
It really is just an escape. So much cheaper than the bottle of whiskey and hurts less in the morning.
If you have not played it.. you should try it out first it is actually quite fun.
I’m sure it’s a lot of fun, especially with how long it’s been around. I would at least like to try it out someday, but it’s not something you can just pop in and play for a few minutes and see what it’s all about.
Maybe someday I’ll check it out. Thanks for the message, Gwen.
That is true and for sure Mark! You cant just see in a few minutes what it is like. But definitely, if you have a friend who plays… log in for a little while and give it a whirl :)
With the latest expansion you can start a death knight character at level 55 and bypass the childish Barrens Chat… this would be the chat you mentioned on Plinky that you would not like.. the amount of “leet” “noob” and Chuck Norris jokes are probably the only thing I truly HATE about the game. :)
