Review: The Golden Compass

First off, why is it that the best fantasy stories come from England? Is it the accent? The only good American fantasies I can think of are The Wizard of Oz and The Princess Bride.

The Golden Compass is the first in a trilogy of books that my wife read but doesn’t remember. Building off the success of the recent Narnia movie(s), this film did poorly in the box office and I’m not sure if they’ll complete the series.

The film is set in an alternate-dimension Earth where people’s souls are visible and manifest in the form of animals. There’s some other stuff that goes on, but I don’t want to spoil it…

…because you see, I liked this movie because I didn’t know anything about it beforehand. Knowing what was going to happen really dampened my Narnia, Harry Potter and Hobbit movie-going experiences. I also like movies where the main character has some sort of unknown pre-determined destiny. Having James Bond, Magneto and Sam Elliott in your cast doesn’t hurt, either.

All in all, it was a good experience, and I hope we get to see the series through to the end. I hope they do A Wrinkle In Time next.

Score: 4 out of 5 Armored Ice Bears
