Gadgetronic: Xbox 360 Messenger Kit / “Chatpad”

I just want to take a second and show some love for the Xbox 360 Messenger Kit, commonly referred to as the “chatpad”.

It looks clunky at first, but within minutes it becomes second-nature, and feels very natural. Also, the weight of the pad offsets the top-heaviness of the controller itself, giving you a more balanced controller. It’s also backlit, which is helpful if you’re playing in a dark room.

And when it comes down to it, I prefer to type messages to strangers rather than voice messages, or, heaven forbid, actual voice chat. Call me old fashioned, but talking to people I don’t really know seems a little too personal to me.

It retails for $30.

So do you have this on your controller at all times, or only when you need it? I actually don’t like the extra weight it adds, plus, they don’t have it in Elite black yet.

I keep it on at all times, for that extra heft. It gives me muscles.
